Unfortunately this will be an unpopular review. I picked up House of Salt and Sorrows because it was being raved about on #bookstagram and didn’t want to miss out. Turns out this a retelling of Brother’s Grimm fairy tale, which I never read to begin with and honestly I am not much into fairy tales.
It is part fantasy, part murder and part romance. I did like the gothic and dark feel of the book and I didn’t mind the disturbing violence, gore, blood and talk of suicide that have been controversial among the book blogging community.
I give it three stars because of the very slow burn that FINALLY catches fire about 2/3 of the way through the story line. Honestly if it wasn’t for all the hubbub on Instagram I would have DNF’d this book. I did adore the atmospheric and chilly design but I also need some liveliness and vivacity to keep me engaged as a reader.
I will say that the twist was admirable and the re-imaging was innovative, clever and detailed enough to keep me plodding along to finally reach the turmoil, energy and action in the climax. Overall it was an eerie retelling of a murky fantasy filled with ghosts, Gods and gloom.
Nice post!
